A CAMPANIAN RED-FIGURE BELL KRATER
4TH CENTURY B.C.
Side A: a draped female figure running to the right, with head turned back, holding a phiale in her raised right hand, two balls, one quartered and dotted, and a fillet in the field
Side B: two himation clad youths, rectangular window in the field
Band of wave pattern below the scenes, palmette between large foliate scrolls under each handle, band of laurel under the rim, details in added white
10½ in. (26.2 cm.) high
Provenance
The property of a German private collector, inherited from his father, Dr Erwin Hoess, Austria. It formed part of the family collection which was started in the 1850s by Prof. Anton Hoess.
