Lot Essay
These jade discs might have descended from Neolithic bracelets in pottery and ivory. The thinness of these discs demonstrates the sophisticated workmanship of the lapidaries in the Shang period. The quantity of collared discs in Fu Haos and other Anyang tombs indicated that they were especially popular in Henan at that time. They were widely distributed and were also found in Sanxingdui in Sichuan and Dayangzhou in Jiangxi. For examples excavated from the Fu Hao tomb, see Tomb of Lady Hao at Yinxu in Anyang, Cultural Relics Publishing House, Beijing, 1980, pl. 91 and 94.
