Lot Essay
This work is number 8 from the sold-out edition of 13 + 2 AP.
Van Empel's series World is a carefully constructed synthesis of form and colour. Digitally rendered photo-collages -- a process that has been called a kind of 'visual sampling' -- create lush landscapes of primordial fairy-tale forests in which his figures are situated. The figure and landscape is linked in preternaturally beautiful environs; the resulting images are naive and knowing in equal measure.
Van Empel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts St. Joost, Breda. His works have been shown internationally and are held in a number of private, corporate and institutional collections, including the Sir Elton John Collection, Atlanta/London; George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel. He lives and works in Amsterdam.
