Tasting note : Production: 1,191 cases. This wine hit its peak about five years ago when it was consistently scoring in the mid to upper nineties. One of the great La Tache, it has not proven to be long-lived, although it remains a marvelous example of the vintage. This tasting, from a magnum, displayed a mature garnet color with plenty of amber. The heavenly nose offered up scents of tea, smoked duck, soy, grilled meats, and overripe black-cherries macerated in brandy. On the palate, the 1980 La Tache represents what great Burgundy should be, but so rarely is . Tasting its velvety texture, expansiveness, and layers of lush fruit is like falling into a six foot thick down comforter. It is voluptuous and rich, with plenty of heady alcohol in the finish. I suspect millionaire collectors who have this wine in magnum formats or larger have real treasures in their cellars, but it needs to be consumed. 94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 100 (Aug 1995)
