A silver salt throne and charka
the salt mark of Grigorii Ivanov, Moscow, 1864; the charka Cyrillic mark of Grigorii Serebrianikov, Moscow, 18th century
The salt throne of traditional form on four bracket feet, with pierced back, engraved wtih foliate scrolls, the seat with a Russian adage, the the interior engraved with a cockerel, the front of the body with a later inscription, fully marked; the circular inverted bell-shaped charka engraved with a band of strapwork and scrolling foliage around the upper border, with shaped scroll handle, set in the base with a coronation jeton of Elizabeth in 1742, marked on rim
The salt 2 5/8 in. (6.7 cm.) high; the charka 1½ in. (3.8 cm.) high
The adage translates as: 'Lunch without salt and bread is just half a meal'.
The inscription beneath reads: '18 II/VI 65'
The inscription on the base of the charka medallion translates as: 'Elizabeth the Empress and autocrat of All Russia crowned in Moscow in 1742'. (2)
