Cyrillic mark of Pavel Ovchinnikov with the Imperial warrant, Moscow, 1895
Circular, on beaded stepped foot, the body repoussé, chased and engraved with eight lobed reserves containing allegorical and mythological animals, with foliate strapwork roundels beneath, each within reeded entwined borders, with a twisted rope-work border above, the everted rim engraved with a presentation inscription in Russian, marked on foot and under base
7 7/8 in. (20 cm.) high;
The Russian inscription on the rim translates as: 'For the president of the French Republic Félix Faure from the city of Moscow 1897.'

Lot Essay

Félix François Faure (1841-1899) was President of France from 1895 until his sudden death. In 1896 he received the Russian Emperor Nicholas II in Paris and the following year returned the visit. After the visit of 1897 the Franco-Russian Alliance was publicly announced.
