A revised version of de Reina's Bible (see previous lot), first published in 1569, which has become known as the Reina-Valera. Cipriano de Valera (ca 1532-1606) was probably born in Valera la Vieja and after graduating from the University of Seville, he entered the monastery at San Isidoro del Campo. Along with de Reina and other monks who had taken up a protestant position, he was forced to flee Spain around 1557 when faced with an investigation by the Inquisition. He settled first in Geneva, later traveling to England to spend time at Oxford and Cambridge. He revised and rewrote Reina's translation, publishing the New Testament in London in 1596 and the entire Bible in Amsterdam in 1602. Darlow and Moule 8475; Palau 28942.
