Lot Essay

Windsor Castle, as it emerges through the swirling mists in the present watercolour, seems almost to float above the Thames and above the children who feed the swans at the water's edge. Goodwin has incorporated his delicate use of colour with his poetic treatment of the landscape and created an atmospheric composition that illustrates the influence of Joseph Mallord William Turner, R.A. (1775-1851).
