A CARVED OVAL AGATE CAMEO REPRESENTING A SACRIFICIAL SCENE
18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Depicting a bull being led to a garlanded altar by a group of figures draped and wreathed, the sacrificer carrying an axe over his shoulder, groundline; in a silver-gilt oval mount applied to a rectangular ebony ground within a later ormolu-mounted wood frame

The scene is a reduced version of a marble relief known as the 'Suovetaurilia' in the ante-room of the Library of San Marco, Venice, illustrated by A. M. Zanetti, Delle Antiche Statue Greche e Romane (Venice, 1740, I, pl. 50). It was published by B. de Montfaucon, L'Antiquité Expliquée (Paris, 1722, II, part 1, pl. LXXXII) as the subject of an engraving by Antonio Lafieri in the mid 16th century.

La scène représente la version réduite d'un relief en marbre connu sous le nom de Suovetaurilia conservé dans l'antichambre de la bibliothèque San Marco, à Venise, illustré par A. M. Zanetti, Delle Antiche Statue Greche e Romane (Venise, 1740, I, pl. 50). Publiée par B. de Montfaucon, L'Antiquité Expliquée (Paris, 1722, II, part 1, pl. LXXXII) comme le sujet d'une gravure par Antonio Laferi datant de la moitié du XVIème siècle.
