Une coiffure élaborée sous un voile noué à l'arrière de la tête, une stola drapée sur sa poitrine et tenant une coupe contre elle, le regard vers la droite; dans une monture ovale torsadée en vermeil, appliquée sur un fond de jaspe rouge, enchâssé dans un cadre associé, en bronze doré architecturé de forme rectangulaire, bordé de caryatides en consoles soutenant un fronton à volutes orné d'une coquille surmontée d'un masque de putto ailé

A CARVED AGATE CAMEO BUST OF A WOMAN
16TH CENTURY
Her hair elaborately dressed, a veil tied into a knot at the back of her head, stola draped over her breast and holding a cup close to her, facing to the right; in a silver-gilt rope twist oval mount applied to a red jasper ground within an associated rectangular gilt-bronze architectural frame with flanking caryatids emerging from consoles supporting a scrolled pediment with scallop shell surmounted by a winged putto mask

The present portrait may represent Sophonisba, the patriotic and beautiful African queen who swallowed poison rather than face the humiliation of captivity by the Roman conquerors of her kingdom. For, thus exemplifying royal dignity and courage, as did Cleopatra during the Renaissance, these women were regarded as heroines. Il se peut que ce portrait représente Sophonisbe, cette reine africaine, belle et patriote, qui préféra s'empoisonner plutôt que de subir l'humiliation de sa captivité par les romains qui avaient conquis son royaume. Symbole de la dignité royale et du courage, comme l'était Cléopâtre à la Renaissance, ces femmes étaient considérées comme des héroïnes.
