Lot Essay

The original, on canvas, signed, 66 x 80.5 cm, is in the Stedelijk Museum the Lakenhal, Leiden since 1907 (Braun, op.cit, no235). It is generally believed to date from the early 1660s, although the present copy and another one bear dates from the 1650s. The picture is thought to be a pendant to a painting of a couple by a pigeon-loft, now in a private collection in Zürcich (K.Braun, op.cit., no237). As such they were offered at the Ten Kate Sale, Amsterdam, 10 June 1801, lot 146. The catalogue of Lakenhal lists two other copies: one in the collection of Mrs. Hoog-Stroevenbelt, Zutphen 1979; and another offered for sale at Koller, Zürich, 6 May 1966.
