Lot Essay
A detail after the original, signed, 82 x 70.5 cm, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (K.Braun, Alle tot nog toe bekende schilderijen van Jan Steen, p.114, No199, with ill.)
Often the family in the picture is identified as Jan Steen's own family. The girl holding a Saint John the Baptist-doll in the foreground is said to be his daughter Catharina, while the boy with the golf club is believed to be her brother Cornelis. The woman at their right is identified as their mother Grietje van Goyen. However, there seems to be insufficient evidence to support this theory (See H.P. Chapman, W. Th. Kloek and A.K. Wheelock, Jan Steen, Schilder en Verteller, Washington & Amsterdam 1996-1997, pp.197-199, No30, with ill.).
