Lot Essay

The chairs' carved heart-shaped backs and characteristic tapering lower arm supports support an attribution to Gillow, cabinet-makers of London and Lancaster. The chair back, in particular, relates to a pattern dated 1788 in the firm's archives (and reproduced here; also see L.Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, pl.272).
