Lot Essay
Hyacinthe-Jean Régnier was active at the Sèvres factory from 1825 to 1863 as a decorator of pâte-sur-pâte. The form, 'Vase Rimini' was designed by J.P.M. Diéterle, who was head of the workshop at that time.
A pair of Vase Rimini (3me grandeur) decorated with pâte-sur-pâte figures on a celadon ground is recorded entering the Sèvres magasin de vente on 31 March 1858 (Registre Vv 6, folio 43, no 26) . This pair, which is likely the entry for the present lot, was sold to M. Roussile on 1 April 1858 for 2800 francs.
See Marcelle Brunet and Tamara Préaud, Sèvres Des origines à nos jours, Paris, 1978, p. 296, fig. 388 for an example of this form displayed by Sèvres at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1855. Compare Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, London, 1992, p. 22 for a similarly decorated tazza by Régnier also displayed at the 1855 Exposition and bought by the South Kensington Museum.
