Lot Essay

Hyacinthe-Jean Régnier was active at the Sèvres factory from 1825 to 1863 as a decorator of pâte-sur-pâte. The form, 'Vase Rimini' was designed by J.P.M. Diéterle, who was head of the workshop at that time.

A pair of Vase Rimini (3me grandeur) decorated with pâte-sur-pâte figures on a celadon ground is recorded entering the Sèvres magasin de vente on 31 March 1858 (Registre Vv 6, folio 43, no 26). This pair, which is likely the entry for the present lot, was sold to M. Roussile on 1 April 1858 for 2800 francs.

See Marcelle Brunet and Tamara Préaud, Sèvres Des origines à nos jours, Paris, 1978, p. 296, fig. 388 for an example of this form displayed by Sèvres at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1855. Compare Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, London, 1992, p. 22 for a similarly decorated tazza by Régnier also displayed at the 1855 Exposition and bought by the South Kensington Museum.
