Lot Essay

The present painting is from the collection of Honora Moore, who had frequently visited Natalia Goncharova's Paris apartment in 1960. Over a decade later, upon realizing that she and the art dealer Edouard Loeb, who had introduced her to Goncharova, each possessed half of an abstract diptych by the artist, Ms. Moore exchanged her half with Mr. Loeb for the present still life, which she had long admired. This photograph of Goncharova in her Left Bank studio was taken by Ms. Moore during the time she spent in Paris.
