Lot Essay

Van Goyen here uses a clump of trees on a rise in the centre to accentuate the perspective leading the eye to the right, where waggons are riding out on to the low horizon. Behind the trees a farm can be made out. He used similar settings already in earlier pictures [Beck, op. cit., 1973 and 1987, II and III, nos. 1013, 1041 and 1116 (1633), 1018aA and 1135aA (1635), 1165 (1647)], and in his view of the church of Nieder Elten of the same year as the present drawing (Beck, op. cit., 1973, II, no. 154).
