black chalk, grey wash, brown ink framing lines, watermark pascal lamb in a crowned shield (cf. Beck no. 3).

Lot Essay

Probably a view along the Rhine near Arnhem, Nijmegen or Elten that Van Goyen saw during his trip along that river in 1650/51 (see also the following lot in this sale). A copy after this is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Besançon.
