2 volumes, text: 4° (280 x 225mm) and atlas: 2° (455 x 295mm). Half-title in text vol. Large folding map and 2 folding plans in the text vol., atlas vol. with 100 engraved plates, 5 of these hand-coloured. (Some light spotting in the plates.) Contemporary polished burgundy calf by Ph. Selenka with his ticket, sides richly panelled in gilt and blind, sprinkled edges (spines evenly faded, one side lightly scuffed).

FIRST EDITION OF PACHO'S PIONEERING DESCRIPTION OF THE COAST OF PRESENT-DAY LIBYA and its inland oases, then little-known, for which he won a prize from the French Société de Géographie. The plates show views and plans of mosques, ancient temples, forts and others buildings, also recording the epigraphic finds associated with Cyrene and other Classical settlements. With a dictionary of Arabic place names, and of the dialect of the inhabitants of the Audjelah oasis. In a handsome contemporary binding by Selenka.
