A BIBLIOPHILE COPY. Hirt was an archaeologist and teacher at the Bauakademie in Berlin who had lived in Rome from 1782-96. He found 'the very ideal of architecture' in Greek architecture, and held that 'the man who builds properly inevitably builds in the Greek manner'. He was a strong proponent of 'form follows function', and advocated a functionalist Classicism, with both structure and ornament determined by the building's purpose. Cf. Kruft, History of Architectural Theory from Vitruvius to the Present, 1974, p. 293; Berlin Kat. 2058; J. Zimmer, 'Nachrichten über Aloys Hirt und Bibliographie seiner gedruckten Schriften', Jahrbuch der Berliner Museen, 41, 1999, no. 60; RIBA 1506.
