CURTI, one engraved folding plate by LODOVICO MATTIOLI after GIUSEPPE PELLEGRINI and MARC ANTONIO CHIARINI, one full-page woodcut illustration in text (small tear at margin of folding plate). Contemporary vellum, lettered in ink on front cover and spine, toggle closures.
In October 1702, the city of Bologna celebrated the arrival of PHILIP V (1683-1746), King of Spain. Parga praises the King in his text, discusses the Spanish influence in Bologna, and also provides the series of lectures given at the Colegio Mayor de Españoles in Bologna in which characteristics of the university are symbolically compared to those of the mythological Phoenix. The frontispiece shows Cardinal Albornoz, whose campaigns in the 14th century brought the Spanish into Bologna, and the folding plate illustrates the elaborate machina di fuochi built for the celebration.
