An account of the ceremonies of public mourning in Naples for PHILIP II (1527-1598), King of of Spain, who died on 15 September 1598 at his palace El Escorial outside Madrid. On 31 January 1599, services were held in the Cathedral of Naples in which a monumental mausoleum was specially constructed for the occasion. Designed by DOMENICO FONTANA, the former chief architect of St. Peter's in Rome, the splendid baroque tabernacle is illustrated in the folding plate and described in great detail in the text.
