The breakfront veined white marble top above a central fluted frieze drawer over a floral-festooned panelled cupboard door centred to the bottom with a laurel-garlanded flower-filled urn, flanked by a pair of drawers over a further pair of panelled cupboard doors, the interior of the central cupboard with two silk-lined shelves, the interior of the right side cupboard fitted with a glazed compartment with drop-down front, with panelled sides and fluted pilaster angles headed by rosettes, on large toupie feet; stamped 'GROHE/A PARIS' numerously to the top and back of the carcass and to the tops of the drawers, doors and base, the door lockplates stamped 'HUBY FILS SERRURIER/PARIS'

Lot Essay

The Parisian firm of Grohé was established in the mid-1820s by Guillaume and Jean-Michel Grohé. They exhibited at the major exhibitions throughout the 19th century and supplied furniture to the French Royal households, as well as to Queen Victoria. Following Guillaume's retirement in 1861, the younger brother Jean-Michel managed the business until 1884, when it ceased trading.
