In the mid 1980s Ray Connolly was asked by Warner Bros. to write the screenplay for Working Class Hero a film intended to cover the life of the young John Lennon up until the Beatles recorded their first release. Connolly, having written two successful rock music screenplays previously, and having interviewed the Beatles extensively in the 1960s was excited at the prospect. He decided to write to Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison to see if they would be happy to assist. Paul and Ringo politely declined through their secretaries, George however, sent this personal letter in response. Connolly in his accompanying note relates that Nevertheless I wrote the screenplay and....the producers and the Warners' executives were very complimentary. Gradually, however, as the inevitable legal problems arose, the project was put on to a back burner...George was right. I shouldn't have got involved...
