Lot Essay

S. S. Pimenov (1784-1883) modelled the figure of Vodonoska [the water carrier] at the Imperial Porcelain Factory in 1817. Inspired by his friendship and association with artists such as Venetsianov, Orlovsky and Kiprensky, his figural work progressed from the classical to the naturalistic. For a similar model of this figure see G. Agarkhova, N. Petrova, 250 Years of Lomonosov Porcelain Manufacture St Petersburg 1744-1994, Disentis, 1994, illustrated p. 49.
