An 18ct gold hunter cased keyless lever minute repeating pocket watch

Rhodium finished movement jewelled to the hammers with bimetallic compensation balance, two hammers striking on gongs, white enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, out fifth second timing scales and gold spade and poker hands, circular case with hinged covers and cuvette, the covers with engine turned decoration, the front cover with the Imperial Russian arms highlighted in black and blue enamel, the inside of the front cover inscribed in Russian, '[Vsemilostivishe pozhalovany]/To the artist/of the French troupe/of the Imperial St Petersburg Theatre/L. Guitry/1890', cuvette additionally inscribed 'Pavel Buhre/supplier to the Court of his Highness', repeat slide in the band, case and cuvette numbered 2026

Lot Essay

The accomplished French stage actor, Lucien Germain Guitry (1860-1925), worked in St Petersburg during the 1880s. His son, Alexandre-Pierre Georges Guitry (1885-1957) was born there in 1885. He was named after Emperor Alexander III and was a godson of Nicholas II. Later nicknamed Sacha, he went on to become a famous actor, director, screenwriter and playwright.
