The rectangular panel carved in high relief with a multi-levelled landscape scene of an equestrian figure riding over a bridge followed by various attendants and greeted by a seated official, his wife and attendants, within a pavillion complex, all surrounded by rockwork and trees

Lot Essay

It is suggested that such panels were once the lid for large boxes, used to contain marriage documents. Several complete boxes of this type are in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing and illustrated in Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, pls. 146-7.
