MARK OF ASPREY, LONDON, 1956
The blade engraved with a coat-of-arms and an inscription, with an ebony handle, the terminal applied with a cast Tudor rose, marked underneath, contained in a fitted case
11½ in. (29.5 cm.) long
The arms are for the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers.

The inscription reads 'PRESENTED TO H.R.H. THE DUCHESS OF KENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE FOURTH CLOTHWORKS' HALL 17^T^h JULY 1956'.

Lot Essay

The fourth Clothworks' Hall replaced a building of 1850 designed by Samuel Angell, which had been destroyed buring the Blitz of 1941. The new Hall was begun by Henry Tanner, succeeded by Herbert Austen Hall who was the main designer. The foundation stone was laid on 17 July, 1956 by Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent and the Hall opened for business in 1958.
