NABOKOV, Vladimir Vladimirovich. Zashchita Luzhina. [The Luzhin Defence.] Paris: Editions de la Seine, n.d. [but c.1967]. 8° (182 x 134mm). (A few corners creased.) Original printed wrappers (light wear; the front cover inscribed 'signed' in black marker). [With, laid-in:] -- Working draft introduction for this edition, heavily corrected in pencil by the author, carbon typescript on thin paper, 9 pages, 4to, folded once (light wear in the margins). Provenance: Vladimir Nabokov (book label; drawing) -- by descent to the consignor.
WITH A FINE BUTTERFLY DRAWING, AND A DRAFT OF THE INTRODUCTION HEAVILY CORRECTED BY THE AUTHOR, these changes reflected in the published version. The butterfly is labelled 'Obloshka obloshkensis' ('cover in the place of cover') -- some suggest that Editions de la Seine was CIA sponsored; perhaps Nabokov was punning on this association. The drawing is signed three times by the author, as Sirin and Nabokov, with various dates although probably all done at the same time. Juliar A10.6.
