Lot Essay

From a series of Nativity, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension wares made after engravings by Dutch artist Jan Luyken published in a 1734 Amsterdam Bible. The subject is rare in famille rose; it was more often made in grisaille and gilt. See an example in the Hodroff Collection published by R.W. Fuchs in Made in China, p. 66, and sold Christie's, New York, 21 January 2009, lot 192.
