The interior chased with a circular gilt medallion depicting a double-headed eagle within a laurel wreath and engraved with foliage, the gilt handle engraved with a vase of flowers, the exterior engraved with the traditional gilt presentation inscription within four circular medallions and a continous band, re-gilt

Lot Essay

A similar kovsh was exhibited at Lugano, Villa Favorita, Gold and Silver from the Hermitage, 2 November, 1986, p.87, pl.58.

The inscription states that this kovsh was presented in 1687 by the Tsars Ivan and Peter Alekseevichi to the head of the Astrakhan tax collectors
