Lot Essay

The original was made in 1586 by the master gunsmith Andrei Chokhov and is regarded as a remarkable example of 16th Century smithing. It is supposed to weigh forty tonnes, the length of the barrel is five meters and thirty-four centimeters and the calibre is eighty-nine centimeters. It is decorated in bas relief incorporating the portrait of Tsar Feodor Ivanovich. It was made for the protection of the Kremlin, but was never fired.
