SIGNED SHAH MAHMUD, SAFAVID IRAN, DATED AH 973/1565-66 AD
Persian manuscript on gold-speckled paper, with 6ll. of black nasta'liq written in the diagonal within cloud bands on gold illuminated ground, four floral illuminated triangular panels along the sides, a triangular cartouche with inscription above and below, one signed and dated, laid down between gold, blue and orange rules and illuminated borders, the reverse with a miniature depicting a youth with a wine cup and a bottle, smudged, with areas of repainting, the card margins with finely drawn floral arabesques outlined with gold and reserved against silver- and blue-speckled ground, minor areas of smudging and scuffing
Calligraphic panel 7¼ x 3in. (18.4 x 7.8cm.); folio 12 x 8 5/8in. (30.3 x 22cm.)
