Arabic manuscript on paper, 449ff. plus four fly-leaves, each folio with 14ll. of black rayhani, opening bifolio with two lines of gold naskh in illuminated cartouches above and below the central text panel, further cartouches with gold kufic on blue floral ground with vine to the sides, sura headings in gold naskh within gold rules followed by the number of verses, words, letters and ruku', gold roundel verse markers, the name of God in gold naskh, some diacritics in blue, red or green, some words in red, the text within gold-ruled frame, marginal markers in gold, red or green, marginal comments, catchwords, colophon removed from the final bifolio, followed by a Qur'anic commentary with possibly added colophon signed Husayn bin 'Ali al-Qirmi and alphanumerically dated Wednesday 8 Dhu al-Qa'da AH 797/25 August 1395 AD, trimmed, in Ottoman gilt and stamped brown morocco binding with flap, with gilt leather and marble paper doublures

Lot Essay

This Qur'an bears the waqf seal of Shaykh al-Islam son of the deceased Shaykh Mustafa Agha son of the deceased al-Hajj Husayn Agha dated AH 1175/1761-2.

The main text is followed by some 15 folios of text taken from numerous sources induding Muhammad bin Mahmud al-Samarqandi and Muhammad bin Tayfur Sajavandi's comments on the text of the Qur'an, its numerous divisions, readings, rules of copying and an index on some words. The marginal notes in the manuscripts and the added text all point to this copy having been written for use in a theological school.
