AN OTTOMAN GILT-WOOD SMALL CHEST
OTTOMAN TURKEY, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form with a hinged rounded lid, the interior with a number of drawers and compartments, the gilt, encaustic painted and engraved decoration with garlands and interlocking medallions around the sides, the top painted with a trophy between four medallions with stars, a radiating sun on each small side, each small side also with a brass handle, the interior of the lid with a gold cornucopia on blue ground with gold stars between two crescents and four spandrels inscribed with the name of God, the gilt decoration enhanced with stippling, the hinges a later replacement, areas of flaking and rubbing, the top partly repainted
