Lot Essay

George Kondratievich Borodin was born in 1860 into a prominent family of Ural Cossacks. In 1884, he earned the rank of podesaul and, in 1896, the rank of esaul. Borodin served in the Russo-Japanese War and, having earned the rank of major-general in 1917, fought on the side of White Army during the Revolution. In March of 1920, he surrendered to the Red Army and was sent to a concentration camp in Northern Dvina, where he was executed in March of 1921.

The residence of the Ural atamans hosted such important guests as Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich in 1837, Lev Tolstoy, and Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich in 1891. It was presumably on the occasion of the latter visit that the present pin was given to Borodin by the Tsarevich.
