ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PUBLICATIONS BY ONE OF THE GREAT EUROPEAN MAPMAKERS OF THE 17TH-CENTURY. In 1684 Coronelli founded the first geographical society, Venice's Accademia degli Argonauti. His maps and plates were published under the aegis of the Argonauti, and gathered in the Atlante Veneto -- a work intended as a continuation of Blaeu's Atlas Maior. It is no mere collection of maps but 'a compendium of geographical, cosmographical, and scientific information... on contemporary Italian science and geography' (The World Encompassed, p.195). The volume includes Coronelli's important map of North America, featuring one of the best renderings of California as an island. Leighly, California as an Island, 88; Phillips, Atlases, 521.
