CHURCHILL, Winston S. Typed letter signed to Robert Graves, Lake Como, 11 September 1945, one page, 4to; with a letter signed by Churchill's personal private secretary, 27 November 1944, acknowledging an inscribed copy of The Golden Fleece.

Reading The Golden Fleece: 'It is the stiffest of all your books, but once it gets hold of you, you cannot put it down. I am astonished at the tremendous amount of study and knowledge you have amassed ... Some say that the present day Greeks are only Levantines, or at the best the descendants of the slaves of the Ancient Greeks. But your book shows that their ancestors behaved in exactly the same way as they do now, and that Greek mythology is as tangled as Greek politics'.

Churchill had resigned as prime minister on 26 July 1945. The holiday in Como, staying with his daughter Sarah as a guest of Field Marshal Alexander, was a bid to escape the ensuing depression. He did a good deal of painting.
