'A GLOOMY OUTLOOK' FOR POST-WAR FRANCE. Churchill responds to an analysis of the political situation in Paris, 'I am naturally most grieved to see France fall again into political fatuity and, of course, if they became definitely Communist, I should consider them ruined for ever ... I still nurse the hope that France will shape her destiny in harmony with the two great western democracies'; he fears a 'gloomy outlook' even in a three-party coalition, as 'the Communists, who give nothing, will not only carry a great number of points, but will infiltrate steadily through their organization and persistency into the Socialist party', also remarking on the 'folly' of French policy towards Franco. The letter concludes on a mordant note 'I hope that even a Communist France will not debar me from Monte Carlo. / Things are pretty grim here'.

Churchill had just returned from a visit to the United States, where he gave the famous 'iron curtain' speech in Fulton, Missouri, on 5 March. His gloom at the international outlook was exacerbated by ill health, and he had even contemplated handing over the leadership of the Opposition to Anthony Eden.
