AN EGYPTIAN OBSIDIAN TORPEDO VASE
THIRD INTERMEDIATE PERIOD, DYNASTY XXII-XXIII, CIRCA 9TH-8TH CENTURY B.C.
Well-hollowed on the interior, the long body with slightly curving walls tapering to the rounded, pointed base, the nearly horizontal shoulders sharply-angled at the junction with the body, with twin stylized duck-head lugs below the junction, a short cylindrical neck and an overhanging disk rim, the rim overlaid with thin gold sheet
3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm.) high

Lot Essay

The shape of this vessel recalls Phoenician transport amphorae (see pl. 4-6 in Bikai, The Phoenician Pottery of Cyprus). For an example in Egyptian blue of similar scale see no. 25 in Stern and Schlick-Nolte, Early Glass of the Ancient World, 1600 B.C. - A.D. 50.
