FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CHEKHOV TO HIS FRIEND THE JOURNALIST AND WRITER NIKOLAI ALEKSANDROVICH LEIKIN on the half-title. Leikin was the editor and publisher of the comic magazine Oskolki from 1882-1905. The young Chekhov contributed over 200 stories, many in the manner of Leikin, between 1882 and 1887 to this publication. This collection of short stories, a form which Chekhov revolutionized, was published in the year of the staging of Chekhov's first full length drama, "Ivanov."
