EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 4TH-3RD CENTURY BC
The sides and edges finely carved with crisp facets, the pale grey stone banded in opaque white; together with a small white jade cicada, Qin dynasty, 3rd century BC, the head faceted and with rounded eyes, with a rope-twist border at the back of the head, the canted wings carved with markings; and a white and russet jade cicada-form pendant, of thick triangular section

Lot Essay

The first of the two cicadas, with its finely carved details, is similar to one dated Western Han dynasty, excavated from the tomb at Sushantou, Tongshan, Jiangsu province, illustrated by Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol. 7, Beijing, 2005, p. 138.
