Lot Essay

Balthazar Knie (fl.1743 - d.1817) is regarded as Scotland's most renowned and prolific barometer maker of the late 18th/early 19th century. Born in Germany and trained as a glass blower, he is first recorded in Edinburgh in 1776 and remained active until his death in 1817.
