A Porcelain Cup and Saucer from the Raphael Service
By the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg, period of Alexander III, dated 1894
Circular, the cream body decorated with three octagonal cartouches painted en grisaille, the central one with a centaur battling a sea monster on red ground, flanked with a putto and pitcher on green ground and Diana on green ground, surrounded by classical-style friezes, the gilt framed lower and upper borders with stylised classical motifs on light blue ground, upswept blue handle with gilt ends, the saucer of confoming decoration with shaped nonagonal blue cartouche, gilt highlighting and red rim, marked under base with gilt crowned monogram of Alexander III and dated 1894 (2)
