2 volumes, 8o (229 x 138 mm). Engraved frontispieces and numerous engraved vignettes and ornaments in text (some light offsetting). Late 18th or early 19th century vellum, covers with a gilt pentaglyph and metope roll border on a blue wash background enclosing an ivy border, gilt Bacchanalian goat mask upper cornerpieces and Sphinx lower cornerpieces, covers with drawings under the vellum, Volume One upper cover of showing Adam, the lower cover showing ladies dancing to a piper, Volume 2 upper cover showing Eve, the lower cover on a black painted background showing cherubs (oval, 75x92 mm), smooth spines gilt-lettered on a blue wash background and a brown wash background with blue-wash gilt bands, remaining spine gilt with ornamental horn and wheat design, edges gilt concealing two fore-edge paintings of CLASSICAL RUINS AND A PICTURESQUE LAKE SCENE, contemporary green morocco gilt slipcases (light crack to foot of volume one, some loss to blue wash, slight yellowing); modern cloth folding case.
