Contemporary etruscan calf, covers with gilt pentaglyph and metope roll border enclosing a stained border of classical palmettes gilt roll of Greek key pattern and large central tree calf panel, spine in 6 compartments, black morocco gilt label in one, a repeated gilt- and blind-stamped panel in the rest, gilt edges concealing a fore-edge painting of A HUNTING SCENE (spine repaired at head and foot, corners worn); modern half morocco slipcase. Provenance: Henry Irby (bookplate); Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's New York, 17 October 1988, lot 1315.

"For at least ten years at the end of the eighteenth century [James Edwards] was, in addition to being active as a bookseller, active also as a publisher." In addition to being bound by the Edwards of Halifax bindery, this is one of James' published works. (Weber II p.41). Weber I, p.139.
