maker's mark of Erich Hanssen, Hamburg, circa 1670
On shaped domed foot repoussé and chased with a band of auricular ornament, the sleeve repoussé and chased with a band of Neptune, mermaids, mermen and sea-monsters, the auricular scroll handle cast and chased with a caryatid, the flat topped domed cover chased with further auricular ornament and with similar bifurcated thumbpiece, with acanthus bud finial, marked on body and cover with later Dutch and French control marks
