Lot Essay

These sideboard-tables are designed in the French antique fashion promoted by George Smith, Upholder to George IV, when Prince of Wales. With their Egyptian reed-clustered pillars, these tables relate to one of his 1804 sideboard patterns (G. Smith, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, pl. 92). A table of this form features in an early 19th century dining-room elevation executed at Messrs Gillows, Oxford Street workshops (S. E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, vol. II, Woodbridge, 2008, p. 357, pl. E19).
