Lot Essay
See Ronald G. Cooper, English Slipware Dishes 1650-1850, London, 1968, for a discussion of three slipware royal portrait chargers which share characteristics with the present example, including a star-shaped decoration at the king's throat above his ermine cloak, and delicate hands extending from lacy cuffs. Of these, pl. 109, the example in the Rous Lench Collection sold Sotheby's, London, 1 July 1986, lot 80, is the closest to the present dish. Pl. 108, also signed by William Talor, depicts Archbishop William Juxon crowning Charles II. Pl. 103, unsigned but unquestionably by the same hand and dated 1685, depicts William III.
Burslem parish records include an entry for the baptism of a William Taylor in August, 1624 son of a man by the same name. Another William Taylor, son of Richard and Joan Taylor, appears in the Wolstanton register as baptised in December, 1632. See Grigsby, op. cit., p. 52.
