THE 1937 VINTAGE IN BURGUNDY
"Close run by the '34 now, but unquestionably the outstanding vintage in this difficult decade. Growing conditions near to ideal thanks to warm weather from May throughout the summer. If anything, there was too much sun and too little rain, the welcome sprinkling in September being insufficient to swell the grapes. The harvest began on the 27th in excellent conditions. The crop was small, roughly half that of the '34, the grapes more concentrated and tannic; this enabled the best wines to keep extraordinarily well. *****" Michael Broadbent MW, Vintage Wine
Romanée-Conti--Vintage 1937
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Levels: one 6cm, one 6.5cm below cork; wax capsules chipped and partially missing at top, lightly bin soiled and nicked labels, vigne originelle francaise non reconstituée labels
"This example displayed a hint of VA and was surprisingly reserved on the nose with elegant and pure spice notes that add nuance to the completely mature yet still vibrant aromas that introduce still structured and notably powerful flavors that possess impressive vigor and an ethereal, delicious and utterly seductive finish. This is very '37 in style as there is a touch of finishing austerity but that does not detract from the overall impression of supreme class and understated style. A genuinely great RC that will drink well for decades to come. Tasted seven times in the past two years with relatively consistent notes." BH, March 13, 2010
