Lot Essay

William Herbert "Buck" Dunton painted studies of dogs, horse heads and saddles for various parts of his large-scale easel paintings such as McMullin, Guide (Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas) and The Bobcat Hunter (private collection, sold: Christie's, New York, 1 December 2011, lot 113). Most of these studies are in the collection of the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas. Study of a Dog, one of these studies, is a rare example that exists outside of a museum collection.
